Aḥmad Shāh Durrānī established the Durrani Empire (1747–1818) and is regarded as the father of the modern Afghan state. His repeated invasions of India greatly extended his domains. His ornate octagonal mausoleum topped by a dome sits in the center of Kandahar and is situated in the back of the Kirka Sharif (Mosque of the Sacred Cloak). The mosque was said to be the resting place of the cloak of the Prophet Muhammad, acquired by Aḥmad Shāh in the late-18th century
